A Serene Wanaka Home on Sazerac Oak

Wanaka, Central Otago · Residential · Studio Studio

A quiet home near Wanaka, floored in Sazerac, our European oak from the Distilled Collection, in a 180mm plank. Design practice Studio Studio wanted a floor that would hold the mood rather than compete with it. The oak sits back, catches the Central Otago light, and lets the view and the rooms lead.

The brief · Wanaka

Composed, not busy

Wanaka light is bright and it moves. The owners and Studio Studio wanted a home that felt composed rather than busy, calm in the morning and still calm at the end of the day.

The floor had to run through the whole house without shouting, and it had to look right in a room that changes with the weather.

The floor

Sazerac, and what the light does to it

Sazerac is a European oak from our Distilled Collection, made in Europe. The tone is what earned it the job here: subtle and warm, with creamy natural oak notes and a gentle luminosity. Through a house this full of daylight, the floor softens the light rather than bouncing it back.

The oak reads golden and warm in the morning and cooler and more neutral by late afternoon, so the rooms shift through the day instead of sitting flat. The 180mm width gives a generous, contemporary scale without breaking up the smaller rooms.

The result

A floor that earns its keep by not asking for attention

Studio Studio work in clean lines, intentional simplicity and soothing material palettes, and the oak gives that palette its base.

It reads as one continuous surface through the home, so the eye travels to the windows and the hills beyond rather than stopping at the floor. Calm underfoot, and the kind of surface you notice by feel more than by sight.

A name, and a photographer who knows the light

There is a story in the name. Sazerac is named after an early classic cocktail, the anchor of our Distilled Collection.

Studio Studio practise across Auckland and Queenstown, and Biddi Rowley, who photographs architecture out of Wanaka, shot the home in its own light.
