Unique depth of colour
Smoking is a craft that creates a unique depth of colour on oak floorboards, with contrasting and lively tones that are full of character. This is achieved by an intense process where smoke reacts with the oak tannin to colour the wood.
The final stage is the finish. Most of these floors are finished in a pale or dark oil; Château Margaux is UV matt lacquered.

Six floors, and the choice usually comes down to three things.
Tone
Himalaya and Himalaya Herringbone are the darkest of the six. Oak Lapis sits in a deep mid-brown. Metz and Margaux both read grey — Metz a light greige, Margaux a softer silver. Eco Floor Seta is the palest.
Format
Five are wide plank. One is herringbone — Flamingo Himalaya Herringbone, at 140 × 700 mm. Widths are listed on each floor above.
Finish
Five are oiled, three of those ultra matt. Château Margaux is the exception, in UV matt lacquer.
Common questions
Is smoked oak stained?
No. The colour comes from the smoking process reacting with the oak's own tannin, and a finish goes over the top of it — an oil on five of these six floors, UV matt lacquer on Château Margaux.
Does the colour go all the way through the board?
That depends on the individual floor and how it has been finished, so we confirm it per product rather than generalise. Tell us which one you are looking at and we will get you the answer before you order.
Can I get smoked oak in herringbone?
Yes — Flamingo Himalaya Herringbone, at 140 × 700 mm. The other five are wide plank.
Are these floors in stock?
These are specialist floors and most are made to order, so there is usually a lead time. Tell us which one you want and we will confirm where it is up to.
Can I see one before I commit?
Yes, and we would rather you did. Smoked oak shifts a lot under different light — order a sample and put it on the actual floor, in the actual room.
