Case Study: Light Hardwood Flooring in a St Heliers Home

How light hardwood floors made the difference; In the picturesque suburb of St Heliers, a recent renovation has transformed a 1970s bungalow into a modern family haven. The project, led by Box Design, showcases the seamless integration of light timber flooring from the Foundation Collection, enhancing the home’s natural light and coastal charm.

Project Overview

The homeowners, recent arrivals from California, were captivated by the property’s sweeping views across the harbour to Rangitoto, framed by magnificent pōhutukawa trees. While the location was idyllic, the existing home required updates to better suit their family’s needs. They envisioned a space that embraced natural materials and light, providing a canvas for their personal style.

Design and Construction

Collaborating with Box Design, the renovation focused on creating a light-filled, open-plan living area that maximised the stunning views. A key element in achieving this was the selection of light hardwood flooring from the Foundation Collection. This choice not only brightened the interiors but also complemented the home’s natural surroundings.

Key Features of the Foundation Collection:

  • Sustainability: Crafted from responsibly sourced timber with low-VOC finishes.
  • Durability: Engineered to withstand daily wear while maintaining its beauty.
  • European Craftsmanship: Precision-made for stability and longevity.
  • Versatility: Neutral tones that harmonize with various interior styles.

The Result

The renovated home now features a vast open-plan living space where the dining room is backed by a wall of built-in display shelving and overlooks a sunken lounge with a bank of floor-to-ceiling sliders that access the sea view. Pale timber floors team with light-wood cabinetry in the kitchen and hand-blown European glass pendants hanging over the large bench keep the mood relaxed and casual. The light timber flooring enhances the natural light, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that reflects the family’s coastal lifestyle.

A Modern Extension Unified by European Oak Flooring

It was a privilege to work alongside the homeowners on this carefully considered modern extension in Point Chevalier. After living in the original front portion of the home for over a year, the brief was clear: create a seamless connection between the character of the existing villa and the clean architectural lines of the new extension.

The original street-facing rooms featured beautifully aged mataī floorboards, rich with history and patina. Rather than replicate the narrow board format, the owners chose a more refined approach — achieving cohesion through tone, finish, and material integrity instead of size alone.

Modern Renovations

Distilled Collection European Oak Flooring

The flooring solution for this project was selected from the Vienna Woods Distilled Collection, a European-made engineered oak flooring range developed for specification-led residential and commercial projects.

The existing mataī flooring in the original villa was sanded back and carefully colour-matched to a Distilled Collection European oak finish installed throughout the new extension. This approach allowed the junction between old and new spaces to remain visually resolved without replicating board dimensions or historic detailing.

Manufactured in Europe from slow-grown FSC-certified Lithuanian oak, the Distilled Collection is engineered for dimensional stability, durability, and consistency — key considerations for architects specifying timber flooring across connected interior spaces.

Beautifull Kitchen Wood Flooring

Durability, Compliance & Specification Confidence

The Distilled Collection has been developed to meet the technical and compliance requirements commonly expected in architectural specifications, while maintaining a restrained, contemporary oak aesthetic.

  • E3 compliant engineered timber flooring for low formaldehyde emissions
  • Listed on MasterSpec, supporting efficient and accurate specification
  • European-manufactured multi-layer construction for stability
  • Suitable for residential and selected commercial environments
  • Compatible with underfloor heating systems, subject to project specification

These attributes allow the Distilled Collection to be confidently specified where performance, indoor air quality, and long-term durability are required.

Colour Matching & Finish Flexibility

The Distilled Collection offers a controlled palette of European oak tones and finishes, allowing architects and designers to coordinate new flooring with existing materials such as heritage timber floors, bespoke joinery, or cabinetry.

This flexibility is particularly valuable in renovation and extension projects, where continuity between architectural eras must be carefully managed. Finish selection can be refined to support material transitions rather than draw attention to them.

BRINGING THE DRAMATIC AND THE ROMANTIC TO LIFE.

Vienna Woods invites you to view this project completed for a beautiful home in Auckland utilising our Highland Grey timber from the Vienna Woods Chateau Collection.

The home was originally constructed in the style of Brutalism, characterised by its construction that showcases the bare building materials and structural elements over decorative design.

The open spaces within the home attract a varying array of light throughout the day, so it was important to select a timber that offered a warm, natural undertone in contrast to the concrete structures surrounding it. The Vienna Woods Highland Grey timber offers exactly what this space needs, offering both a bit of drama, and at the same time, complimenting the natural light on those romantic or sleepy afternoons.

Working closely with our clients on these projects is always a fantastic experience, and we have fallen in love with this home, just as they have. This client had a vision and knew exactly what they wanted, and were delighted to see their vision come to life. Here’s what the client had to say upon the completion of this project:

Absolutely incredible service. Miguel is the best in the business and the whole process from beginning to end was seamless. We are beyond happy with our beautiful new floor. Thanks so much our whole home feels modern, fresh, and like brand new!”

Modern Villa with Timber Floors and Ceiling

Vienna Woods customer Dan Szczepanski, share’s his experience working with Vienna Woods and the reasons behind why he chose to renovate his home with Esther American Oak Pureline both on his floors and ceilings.

What was your inspiration when designing your home?

Our home is a villa in a ‘special character area’ street, however we didn’t want a villa so we knew when undertaking the renovations that we wanted to make certain changes that would remove the villa aesthetic from our home. Controversial we know – but we wanted something more modern. We were inspired by the Scandinavian look and feel and how that would suit a more open plan lifestyle. We have a 3.3m stud on the main floor and although we have worked hard to erase all traces of the villa interior, we wanted to make the most of the ceilings and retain some character. So we decided to install timber on both the floor and ceilings. It brings in a lot of warmth as it offsets the start white and black of the modern elements of the interior. It also makes our ceiling look even higher, which is an added bonus!

What was the overall look and feel you were trying to achieve?

While we wanted a modern look, we didn’t want anything to severe that some homes can get when a lot of white and black is used in the interior spaces. So it was important to incorporate beautiful timber in order to warm it up. The timber floors and ceilings break up the clean, crisp white really nicely and complement the overall look and feel. Adding timber to our ceilings also created a very interesting feature as it adds a lot of character to our home.

Why did you choose this Vienna Woods flooring?

The Vienna Range is second to none. The quality is prevalent in all their different ranges. We loved the Esther American Oak Pureline because of how it complemented the rest of our interior and really delivered the warmth we were looking for. The timber was also very competitive in terms of buildability and price. The staff  are all very personable and made us feel at ease the moment we engaged with them. Their assistance made it really easy to make our decision.
