Tone is where most people start. It sets the mood of a room before anything else in it — and it is the fastest way to narrow a floor down.

We group our European oak into four tone families: light and natural, medium, grey, and dark. Pick the family that fits your space and your light, then browse the floors within it. Every floor comes as a free sample, so you can see the real colour in the room it is going in before you decide.

Choosing your tone

A few things worth knowing before you settle on a colour.

See it in your own lightColour shifts with the light in the room and the time of day. Always judge a tone where the floor will actually go.
Work back from your paletteLighter walls and joinery let a dark floor read; a light floor keeps a smaller or north-facing room open and bright.
Order free samplesNarrow it to two or three tones, order the samples free, and live with them for a few days before you commit.

The colour of a timber floor does more work than almost any other choice you make. A light oak floor keeps a room open and bright; a medium tone brings out the grain and warmth of the oak; grey reads cool and modern; and a dark floor grounds a space and makes the floor part of the design.
