Care for an oiled floor
An oiled floor is finished with natural oils worked into the timber, not a film on top. It keeps that soft, matt, close-to-the-wood feel, and it stays looking good when you clean it gently and top the oil up now and then. Here’s what we trust for it.
Made for oiled floors, not lacquered
These products are for an oil or hard-wax-oil finish, where the oils sit in the timber and the surface feels matt and natural. They are not for lacquered, varnished or sealed floors. If you have a lacquered floor, head to our lacquered-floor page. Not sure which you have? Ask the team, and test on a small out-of-the-way patch first.
Everyday cleaning
Clean gently. An oiled floor likes a mild soap, not a harsh cleaner.
Re-oil & nourish
Top up the natural oils so the floor stays protected and even.
Clean it gently
An oiled surface is more open than a lacquer, so it wants a mild soap and a well-wrung mop.

Top up the oil
When cleaning alone stops bringing the floor back, deep-clean it, then feed the oil back in.
A word on oily rags
The maintenance oils here are solvent-based. Cloths and pads soaked in the oil can heat up and catch fire on their own as they dry. When you’re done, lay them flat to dry outdoors, or submerge them in water in a sealed metal container before you bin them. Follow the safety data sheet on each product’s page.
Oiled only
FirstFloor Maintenance Oil
Our own FirstFloor maintenance oil — tops up the finish on an oiled floor and refreshes the surface. Test a small area first.

Keeping an oiled floor looking its best
- Sweep or vacuum, then damp-mop with a mild soap made for oiled floors. Wring the mop well.
- Deal with spills quickly. An oiled surface is more open than a lacquer.
- Now and then, or where the floor sees hard wear, top up the oil to keep it protected and even.
- Felt pads under furniture and a doormat keep grit off the surface.
How often to re-oil depends on the traffic. Steps and coverage figures are on each product’s page and data sheet.
