Floor Care Products for Timber Floors

Start with your finish, not the bottle

A timber floor wants a cleaner matched to its finish. Lacquered and oiled floors behave differently, and the wrong product will dull a good floor over time. Pick your finish below and we will show you the cleaners, soaps and maintenance oils that suit it.

Why the finish matters

Two finishes, two routines

Lacquer sits on top of the timber as a sealed film. You are cleaning the coating, so a pH-neutral cleaner keeps it clear and the timber never gets wet.

Oil soaks into the grain and leaves the timber open. It is cleaned with a soap that puts a little oil back each wash, and topped up with a maintenance oil when it starts to look thirsty.

Same floor, different chemistry. That is the whole reason this page splits in two.

Not sure which you have

A quick way to tell

Put a drop of water on the floor in a spot no one sees. If it beads and sits there, the floor is most likely lacquered. If it darkens the timber and soaks in slowly, it is most likely oiled. If you bought the floor from us, ask your rep and we will check the order.

Our guide to cleaning and maintaining timber floors walks through the routine for both finishes, including what to keep off the floor.
