Herringbone Oak Floors in a Saint Heliers Home
A Saint Heliers home above the water, laid in Sazerac Herringbone: a European oak parquet from our Distilled Collection. The house is full of light and looks out across the ocean. Herringbone gives it structure without adding noise, and the oak keeps the whole thing warm.
Light, a big view, and a floor that has to hold its own
The house has the two things you cannot design in: an ocean outlook and a lot of natural light. Both are also a problem for a floor. Strong light shows up everything, and a big view will flatten a room that has nothing going on underfoot.
The owners wanted a floor with enough pattern to give the interior some order and some age, in a home that is otherwise modern.
Sazerac Herringbone, where the geometry leads
Sazerac Herringbone is an engineered European oak parquet from our Distilled Collection, made in Europe and laid in a 600 x 120 x 15mm block. The tone is light and warm and the grain is even, so the pattern does the work rather than the colour.
That is the whole point of a good herringbone: if the boards carry heavy character marks as well as a zig-zag, the floor starts arguing with itself. Here the oak stays quiet and the geometry reads clean. A natural oil finish keeps the sheen low and the surface tactile underfoot. The parquet is engineered rather than solid: a layered construction that helps the blocks hold their shape through the seasonal swings of an Auckland home.
Morning light doing the work
In strong morning light the pattern really shows: the light rakes across the blocks and throws long shadows down the room, and the herringbone gives the floor a direction the eye can follow.
It sits comfortably between modern and classic, which is what the house is. Through the lounge, the dining and up the stair, the same parquet carries the whole level.
A name from the Distilled Collection
There is a story in the name. Sazerac is named after an early classic cocktail, the anchor of our Distilled Collection.
Jo Currie photographed the home, and the morning light doing the work in these frames is not a set-up: it is what the house does.
