Baltic Wood Oak Porcelain flooring on Auckland’s North Shore

A new North Shore build, floored in brushed, oiled European oak.

We laid Oak Porcelain from the Baltic Wood range through the living areas of this new North Shore home in Auckland. It reads as a soft, rustic European oak: a subtle tint over the grain, a micro-bevel on every board, and dark knot filler for character underfoot.

The brief

A warm, neutral floor for a new build

This was a new home on the North Shore, and the open-plan living areas needed one continuous floor to set the tone for the interior. The owners wanted warmth and grain without a loud colour: a European oak that grounds the furniture and finishes rather than competing with them.

Oak Porcelain gave them a pale, tinted oak that carries a room on its own. Run as a single floor colour across the ground floor, it keeps the sightlines clean and makes the space feel larger.

The floor

Oak Porcelain, from the Baltic Wood range

Oak Porcelain is a European oak floor with a subtle tint worked into the oil finish. The oil sits in the timber rather than on top, so the grain stays open and the surface reads matt and natural, not glossy. It is a rustic grade, so knots and movement in the grain are part of the look.

Oak Porcelain is a past Baltic Wood colour we no longer carry. For the same soft, light European oak, start with our current engineered oak collections, or order a free sample to judge the tone in your own light.

The detail

What gives the boards their character

Micro-bevel edge

A small bevel runs down each board edge. It defines every plank and draws the eye along the width, so the floor reads as real timber laid board by board.

Rustic grade

Open knots are filled with a dark filler that plays against the pale oak. Knots and grain movement are kept in, not sorted out, which is what gives the floor its lived-in warmth.

Brushed, oiled surface

A brushed texture lifts the grain for a tactile, three-dimensional surface. The oil finish keeps it soft and matt underfoot.

The result

A quiet foundation the whole interior sits on

Run through the living areas, Oak Porcelain does the job the owners asked of it: a warm, neutral base that lets the joinery, rugs and furniture do the talking. It is the kind of neutral that stays easy to live with, because the colour is honest oak rather than a trend.

Oak Cashmere at Riverbank Lane, Hamilton

A commercial hospitality precinct, floored in warm European oak

Riverbank Lane is a retail and dining laneway in central Hamilton, Waikato, designed by architecture practice Edwards White. Vienna Woods supplied Oak Cashmere, a light, warm-beige European oak, across the shared spaces and eateries including Mr Pickles. Warm, natural, and specified for a working commercial floor.

The project

A Hamilton laneway that had to feel warm

Riverbank Lane sits in the heart of Hamilton, Waikato: a busy laneway home to some of the city’s best retail stores, cafes and eateries. Hamilton architecture practice Edwards White led the design.

The brief

Warm, natural, hospitality-ready

A shared floor for retail and dining that reads warm and natural underfoot, with enough character to suit a relaxed, high-traffic precinct.

What we solved

Character that suits a busy floor

A retail and dining precinct is a lot of floor doing a lot of work, and it still has to feel calm. Oak Cashmere’s warm neutral tone keeps the laneway feeling light and inviting, while the rustic grade, with its natural knots and black filler, carries the character a polished floor would miss. It settles into a working hospitality space rather than fighting it.

For a commercial fit-out, the right grade and finish depend on your traffic, sign-off and maintenance plan. See our commercial timber flooring, or send us the plans and we’ll spec it with you.

Specifier detail

Square-edge boards, for a solid-oak look

Board profile

Square edge, not bevelled

The boards were supplied square-edged rather than micro-bevelled, so the joins read as a subtle line. Across a floor, it mimics the seamless look of solid oak.

Grade and character

Rustic grade, filled knots

A rustic grade with black filler through the open knots gives natural grain and movement, the character that makes the floor feel at home in a laneway setting.

Admonter Oak Stone Alpin – Milford

Admonter Oak Stone Alpin flooring in a Milford home

Admonter Oak Stone Alpin flooring in a Milford home

Austrian European oak, chosen for a North Shore build

Admonter Oak Stone in the Alpin texture is a natural, rustic-grade European oak floor made in Austria. This architecturally distinctive Milford home, on Auckland’s North Shore, used it to hold neutral, low-yellow tones against white brick and to add the tactile, organic character the owner wanted underfoot.

The brief

A neutral oak with texture, not yellow

The owner of this architecturally unique Milford residence wanted a natural oak floor in neutral tones, without too much yellow. It also had to carry real texture: enough character to contrast the white brick walls and give the interior an organic, hand-made feel.

The floor

Admonter Oak Stone, Alpin texture, Rustic grade

The answer was Admonter Oak Stone in the Alpin texture with a Rustic grade. Admonter is an Austrian brand of European oak flooring, made in Austria, that Vienna Woods supplies as a made-to-order special order. Browse the full Admonter collection to see the range. The Rustic grading brings the knots and grain movement forward, so the floor reads as living timber rather than a uniform board.

The detail

What the Alpin texture does

Alpin is where this floor earns its character. It combines strong brushing along the length of each board with scraping of the surface, so light catches the grain differently as you move across the room. You notice the floor underfoot as much as by eye, which is exactly the contrast the owner wanted against flat white brick. It is a genuinely engineered oak board, so it sits better in New Zealand homes than a solid floor; more on that in our guide to engineered timber flooring.

The result

Neutral, organic, and true to the brief

Oak Stone lands the tone: a soft, neutral oak with the yellow pulled back. Paired with the Alpin texture, it grounds the architecture without competing with it. Admonter is made to order in Austria, so allow roughly four to five months from sample to delivery and build that into the programme early.
