Foundation Oak Flooring in an Orakei Home
An Orakei home built around its outlook, with glass on three sides and rooms that open straight onto the terrace. Vienna Woods supplied the Foundation Collection: European oak, made in Europe, in fixed-length 2.2 metre planks with a soft, natural lacquer.
A floor that gets out of the way
This house is about the view. The living spaces are glazed on three sides, the sliders stack right back, and the light changes all day. The owners wanted a floor that would carry that openness rather than interrupt it.
In a room like this, a floor with too much going on becomes the thing you look at. The brief was for warmth and continuity: something soft and Scandinavian in tone that frames the view instead of competing with it.
Foundation Collection, fixed-length European oak
Foundation is our European oak range made in Europe, and it is the one we hold in stock rather than making to order.
What separates it is the format. Every plank is the same length, roughly 2.2 metres, and 200mm wide. No short boards. In an open plan this is the whole trick: long, uniform lengths give you a calm, regular rhythm across a big floor, where a mix of shorts would give you a busy patchwork.
The finish is an air-dried, natural-feel lacquer. Soft and matt rather than plasticky, so the boards keep the look of raw timber underfoot. In a bright room facing that much glass, the low sheen matters more than people expect: a glossy floor in this house would have been a mirror.
Long boards, big view
Run through the living areas, the hallway and the entry, the floor reads as one continuous surface from the front door to the terrace doors. The soft, natural colouring keeps the interior warm without pulling attention off the outlook.
Location: Orakei, Auckland. Flooring: Vienna Woods Foundation Collection.
