Hinterland Verne is the dark end of the collection. A deep, near-black brown worked hard into the grain, so you read the texture before you read the colour. The splits, the knots and the deep brushed texture all stay, which gives it depth in the timber rather than colour sitting on the surface.
The timber looks like it has carried an age. The colours are named for the writers who imagined the future. Verne is named for Jules Verne.
Hinterland is the rawest floor we make. Wide boards, 260mm across and 2.2 metres long, with the open splits, the live knots and the heavy brushing all left in. Timber left wild rather than tidied up.
The finish is a hard wax oil, not a lacquer. It soaks into the timber and cures there, leaving a thin hard wax layer at the surface rather than the separate sealed film a lacquer forms, so the grain stays open and the heavy brushing is what you feel underfoot. An oiled floor asks for a care rhythm. Sweep or vacuum, damp mop with a cleaner made for oiled floors, and give it a maintenance coat of oil when it starts to wear. The usual check is a few drops of water on a busy stretch. If they bead after a few minutes, the floor is fine. If they soak in and darken the timber, that area is ready for a coat. How often depends on traffic and how the floor is used, so talk to us about the care and repair schedule for this floor before you buy.
Engineered for New Zealand
It is an engineered board: a 4mm European oak wear layer over a stable 15mm core (15/4). At 260mm wide, it is one of the widest boards we carry.
Like all timber, engineered oak responds to changes in humidity and will move a little in both width and length. Keep indoor conditions stable, and allow for expansion at the perimeter and in doorways.

‘European oak’ describes the timber species and where the oak is grown. The board itself is engineered overseas to Vienna Woods’ specification. Hinterland is a character-grade floor, so knots, splits, filler and strong colour movement are part of it. Variation between boards, and against samples and on-screen images, is normal and to be expected. The Vienna Woods warranty covers structural integrity for 20 years residential and 5 years commercial. Normal wear, gloss loss and scratches are not covered, so the care rhythm above is what keeps the surface right. This warranty is in addition to your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993.
