Villas are generous, but they are also a series of rooms strung off a long hallway. Renovate one and you have a choice: play up the period, or let it breathe and feel modern. The owners wanted the second.
That meant a floor that would carry the whole ground floor as one surface, hold its own against the villa’s detailing, and not tip the house into pastiche.
Oak Supernatural, with the yellow toned down
Oak Supernatural is a European oak with a softly tinted ultra-matt lacquer that tones the yellow down. That is the detail that matters in a villa. Left untinted, a lot of oak goes golden and drags a character home backwards. Supernatural stays calm and classic instead, which is why it sits just as easily in a contemporary interior.
It is a rustic grade with a medium knot level, and the open knots are rubbed back and filled with a soft beige filler, so there is natural character in the floor without it turning busy. A lightly brushed surface and a square edge profile finish it: no bevel between the boards, so the floor reads as one continuous plane, much closer to the look of solid timber.
The hallway is where it earns its money
Laid in longer lengths running the length of the corridor, the boards pull the eye down to the leadlight door at the end and make an already-long hallway feel longer again. Through the kitchen and dining the light tone lifts the whole level and gives a mixed bag of timber furniture something neutral to sit on.
Where the oak meets the carpeted bedrooms and the tiled bathroom, a brass reveal makes the transition deliberate rather than apologetic. The villa reads fresh and modern, and still reads like a villa.
