Raftwood Yukon: A Rustic Dark Oak Floor in Auckland’s Eastern Suburbs

Auckland Eastern Suburbs · Residential

This is Raftwood Yukon, a heavily textured near-black oak, laid through the main living, dining and lounge of a home in Auckland’s Eastern Suburbs. The floor sets the whole mood of the house: dark, calm, and rich with grain you can read across the room. It grounds the open-plan spaces without ever going flat.

The brief · Auckland Eastern Suburbs

A floor that anchors the home

The owners wanted the floor to be the anchor, not the backdrop. Open-plan living can drift when everything sits pale and matched, so they were after depth and a bit of drama underfoot.

They also wanted texture they could actually feel. A floor with character that reads honest up close, not a printed look, and one that settles comfortably into a home that gets lived in daily.

Dark, textured European oak

Raftwood Yukon is European oak, engineered overseas to Vienna Woods’ specification, and part of our Flamingo range. It is a wide plank, roughly 220mm, with a sawn and brushed surface that leaves the grain open and the character intact. The colour is a deep charcoal with a cool blue-black cast, so it reads near-black without going dead.

The finish is oiled, which is what gives it that soft, hand-worked look rather than a hard sheen. That combination, dark colour plus real texture, is the reason it fits a room meant to feel considered.

The result

It holds the rooms together

In the finished rooms the floor does exactly what the owners wanted: it holds everything together. The dining space runs to glass doors and a green courtyard, and the dark boards make the light and the planting outside pop against them.

Around the lounge, the grey leather sofa and cowhide rug sit warm against the charcoal, and the whole space reads settled. Catch it on an angle and the oiled surface picks up the light along the boards, so the floor shifts as you move through the house.

The detail

Texture you can read up close

Get down close and the sawn, brushed texture shows silvery open grain running through the charcoal, which is what stops a dark floor from looking like a flat block of colour.

An oiled finish like this is generally maintainable in place. The idea is that a scuffed or worn area can often be cleaned back and re-oiled locally rather than resanding the whole floor, though how any floor wears depends on the traffic and the care it gets. It is a finish that suits rooms that get used.
