Extra-wide Chateau Montauk oak flooring in the living area of a Saint Heliers home

Château Montauk Oak Flooring in a Saint Heliers Home

Vale Road, Saint Heliers · Auckland

Extra-wide, deep taupe-brown oak boards run through this Saint Heliers home. Vienna Woods supplied Château Montauk, an engineered European oak in a rustic grade with a matt lacquer finish. Wide boards, few joins, and a floor that anchors the whole interior.

The brief · Saint Heliers

Scale, without the busyness

This Vale Road home has generous, open rooms and a lot of natural light coming through sheer curtains. A narrow board in a pale tone would have chopped that up into stripes and made the space feel smaller than it is.

The brief was for a floor with presence: something dark enough to anchor the interior and wide enough to keep the eye moving across the room rather than counting boards.

The floor

Château Montauk, extra-wide and rustic

Oak Montauk is an engineered European oak floor from our Château collection, engineered overseas to our specification. The species is European oak; the boards are made to our spec offshore.

The Château range is built around an extra-wide plank format, which is the whole point of it. Wide boards create a sense of scale and openness, and they suit open-plan layouts where a floor has to travel a long way without getting fussy.

The colour comes from a treatment that reacts with the oak’s own tannin rather than a paint sitting on top, giving the rich, deep taupe-brown you see here. It is a rustic grade, so expect medium to large knots, grain movement and real colour variation. That character is intentional. The surface is a matt lacquer, which keeps the timber looking like timber and is straightforward to live with.

The result

One deep tone, right through

Run through the living areas, the floor gives the interior a base that everything else sits on. The sheers stay soft, the furniture stays light, and the floor holds the room down.
