Smoked Oak Floors in a North Shore New Build
A Scandinavian-inspired new build on Auckland’s North Shore, floored in Oak Lapis: a smoked European oak from our Admonter range. Dark joinery, black fittings, a deliberately moody palette. The floor had to carry that weight rather than fight it.
A design-led home with atmosphere
The brief was a design-led home with atmosphere, not a neutral box. Interior designers Yellowfox took the interior somewhere sophisticated and moody: dark kitchen cabinetry, black light fittings, a restrained palette.
That only works if the floor has depth of its own. A pale, flat floor under dark joinery reads as a mistake. What the interior needed was a premium floor that would hold the room together and give the whole thing a base.
Oak Lapis, smoked rather than stained
Oak Lapis is a European oak with a smoked brown tone and real depth. The colour is not a stain sitting on the surface. It comes from a traditional smoking process that reacts with the oak’s own tannins, so the tone develops through the timber and shifts board to board.
The result is layered tonal variation, with contrast between the lighter and darker areas of each board and the grain structure pushed forward rather than flattened. A natural oil finish leaves the grain open and the surface warm underfoot. The boards are milled with a micro-bevel, so each one reads cleanly against the next.
A floor that grounds the dark joinery
The floor does the thing the dark joinery needed it to do: it grounds the space. Against black cabinetry and black fittings, the smoked oak reads warm rather than heavy, and the tonal movement keeps a large open-plan floor from going dead. High-end staging from Exhibit One finished the picture.
It is a fair demonstration of how Lapis handles a modern interior, though the same floor sits just as comfortably in a villa or a bungalow, a loft or an apartment. For a retail or office fitout, ask us to check the specification against the manufacturer’s use-class requirements first.
